Vista crashes -- even when winsin is running elsewhere!

Post by rjf7r »

I have a very consistent crash of my entire Vista laptop when using Synchronize It! 2.82 to copy a number of large files either to or from Vista over Ethernet to another system (Windows 2000) -- whether Synchronize It! is running on the Vista system or on the Windows 2000 system!

This is the only situation under which my Vista system crashes -- I can do bulk copies with other tools and have no problems. However, it is very repeatable, even if 2.82 isn't running on the Vista system.

I must admit, it seems bizarre.

a few extra details on the crash

Post by rjf7r »

The crash is just a system hang -- totally non-responsive, requiring a forced power off.

The laptop is a dual core Pentium with Vista Home Premium.

There is nothing in the event log indicative of the problem.

more data

After rebooting the Vista system, I left it running the login screen -- I did not login to Vista. I ran Synchronize It! successfully (and repeatedly) from the Windows 2000 system with the Vista system as the file destination.

I suppose something that runs when I login is interfering in some way.

Thank you for your report! I will check this out, but you better upgrade to latest beta of 3.3 - it is tested and tweaked for Vista.

well, the workaround doesn't always workaround

I just had a system hang with Vista NOT logged in -- so that doesn't always avoid the problem.

Some followup: this appears to be a known Vista problem

Post by rjf7r »

Vista appears to have a number of known problems with file copying over the network to non-Vista systems. Symptoms include slow operation, file corruption, blue screens, and system hangs.

an update: Vista SP1 doesn't hang, still some copy errors

Post by rjf7r »

I'm now running Vista SP1, still running latest Synchronize It! V3.3.

Vista (almost) never hangs any more during a large copy sequence.

However, some of the individual file copies still fail, always large (10 MB+) files. This happens especially often if I haven't just restarted Vista (so I do a lot of restarting Vista to improve my chances).

Sometimes the error is "path to network partner lost" for a particular file copy, and then the next copies in the list are OK.

Another thing I noticed is that these sessions (involving hundreds of files, about 30-40 big ones over 100 MB) either succeed completely or have a significant number of failing files. I rarely have just one failure in a session, although I often have perfect sessions (no failures).

Try using 3.4 beta - maybe vista manifest will help somehow.
