Excel comparisons don't seem to work

I'm using 3.8.6.1771 of ComapreIt! (WinXP) and I can't compare simple Excel files which worked fine with 3.8.1* version. I can seem to change the setting to "View as Excel" in the View menu either (checking to see if I can bypass the text reader). Most of it appears as random text and only a few lines of text actually in the Excels I'm comparing appear. Any suggestions?
