Max. filesize for Word documents

A Word .doc file contains 72000 characters inclusiv spaces.
After a certain number of characters the rest of the file isn't involved any more for comparison.
Is there a maximum and how can this problem be solved in praxis?
The problem occurs with Compare It v4.1.2171.
Today I tried an older version v3.8, and there is no problem with the same Word-document.
